The silvery grey mirror-like sheet of the Brahmaputra’s waters stretches from side to side and I can’t see the banks or where the water segues into the sky in this monochrome landscape. I am surprised by its vastness which looks more like an ocean than a river. On the tempestuous Brahmaputra, one of India’s most mercurial rivers, the tide changes form and shape and swallows islands.
