nehru trophy boat race 2025

- Cruise

Offering one of the most legendary and exciting water sporting events, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in 2025 is undoubtedly one of the most popular in Kerala. It attracts thousands of onlookers across the globe to the serene waters of Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. This sacred festival takes place in August, on the 2nd Saturday to be precise. It is the lively celebration of tradition and swiftness with the divine Chundan Vallams (snake boats). These boats manoeuvre through the backwaters in a harmonious procession to the sound of drums and traditional boat songs. Beyond just a race, it represents the festivities as a rich cultural carnival that celebrates the culture of Kerala, the unity and the spirit of the festival. The whole experience cannot be missed by the traveller who seeks something truly authentic and adventurous.

  • When & Where

    • The race will take place on 30 August 2025, celebrating its 71st edition.

    • The event is held in Alappuzha in the Punnamada Lake. It is also referred to as the Venice of the East.

  • Historical Legacy

    • It was initially started in 1952 on the occasion of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s visit. He showered gold on the victorious rod—subsequently funding a silver trophy fashioned in the shape of a snake boat. Later, the occasion gained its name, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

    • These days, the race is the internationally acclaimed Vallam Kali (boat race), fusing heritage, culture, and competition.

  • Vessels & Rhythms

    • The highlight is the tremendously impressive snake boats. These wooden vessels are at least 100 feet long and rowed by 100-150 men with perfect synchronisation.

    • There is a visceral experience as the boats move in time to the rhythms of Vanchippattu boat songs and rhythms of the chenda drumbeats.

  • 71st Edition Highlights

    • This year sees 71 boats competing across categories such as Chundan, Churulan, Iruttukuthy (A, B, and C grades), and Veppu (A and B grades).

    • The top 16 Chundan Vallams advance to the final through a structured progression of heats—second-losers, third-losers, and finals.

  • Modern Upgrades & Mascot

    • Event organisers implemented technical enhancements, including upgraded starting and finishing systems, standardised paddles, and simplified finishing criteria for better fairness and quality.

    • The official mascot—Kakka Thampuratti rowing a boat—was unveiled recently; designed by S. Anupama (Vattayal), she won ₹10,001 and a certificate.
